Forbidden areas, i.e. areas (sites, cities, countries) that are inaccessible for topographical reasons or especially because of decisions based on political, religious, or other motivations are usually surrounded by an aura of mystery and almost necessarily arouse curiosity. The dream of generations of explorers was to reach Lhasa. An area can be closed not only to outsiders but also to “insiders:” nobody is allowed to leave for the “outside.” The isolation imposed on Japan by the Tokugawa regime was such a (...) two-way seclusion aided, of course, by geographical conditions and hence easily enforceable. It has been suggested, perhaps not quite seriously, that the famous Chinese wall was meant not only to keep out barbarian invaders, but also to prevent Chinese from leaving. That there was some kind of border control is also suggested by the leger, according to which Lao-tse, before disappearing into the west, committed his teaching, the Tao-te-kinq, to writing at the request of the “gatekeeper.” One may well wonder whether there exists another equally influential text written at the behest of a border policeman! This is whether Price's dispositional reduction, or anyone's dispositional reduction can adequately render the act of thinking. Alternatively, the question could, I think, be stated in more presently-favoured language. One could ask whether statements about universals, thoughts, concepts, or ideas can be logically deduced from dispositional statements not containing these "mentalistic" terms. If one is (...) inclined to prefer this more lengthy formulation one may then take this to be my meaning; whenever "dispositional solution" or "dispositional reduction" is mentioned one may translate it into this longer form. Passmore is one of the most outstanding historians of the contemporary philosophical scene. He seems to have read everything, digested it, and has an uncanny ability to empathize with diverse philosophical viewpoints and elucidate them in a clear, witty, cogent style. Although the first three quarters of this revised edition is basically the same as earlier editions, we now have additions to his account of Ayer, Popper, Wittgenstein and Sartre; enlarged sections on Austin, Jaspers and Heidegger; a new section on (...) Merleau-Ponty and a chapter bringing us right up to the present discussions of the mind-body problem in Anglo-Saxon philosophy. With this revised edition, one feels more acutely the pinch of the limitations that Passmore initially set for himself, viz., to treat the ideas of those writers that entered into the public domain of philosophical discussion in England during the past hundred years. Consequently his treatment of continental thinkers is not nearly as complete or perceptive as his treatment of British philosophers, or his chapters on "classical" American thinkers which are among the best written by anybody.—R. Despite the lament of the decline and even the death of political theory, Germino contends that "the revival of political theory is one of the momentous intellectual and cultural developments of our time." The neglect of this revival is, in part, due to the myopia and false conception of political theory by modern political scientists and positivistically orientated philosophers. After criticizing the proponents of the "alleged decline" of political theory, Germino sketches a view of political theory as a tradition of (...) inquiry practiced by the great political theorists from Plato to Hegel. He both describes and criticizes the assault upon political theory by such thinkers as Tracy, Comte, and Marx. The revival of political theory in the grand manner is to be found in such representatives as Oakeshott, Arendt, Jouvenel, and Strauss. It is Eric Voegelin that is the true hero of this revival, and despite his neglect, Germino suggests that later generations may well acclaim Voegelin "as the greatest political theorist of our time." This is a book with a strong positive thesis, and Germino balances developing stages in his argument with expositions of the positions that he both attacks and defends. There is a growing sympathy among both philosophers and political scientists for the defense of the viability of political theory developed in this book, although many of those sympathetic with the thesis may feel that sharper and more penetrating criticism is needed to defend the thesis, and may not share Germino's enthusiasm for Voegelin.--R. In his preface, Smart tells us that there are three types of treatises on the philosophy of science: the philosopher's philosophy of science, "baby" philosophy of science, and the scientist's philosophy of science. He classifies his own attempt as "a not too technical scientist's philosophy of science." But this book is an excellent introduction to contemporary philosophy of science for anyone interested in the topic. Smart writes lucidly and has the gift of carrying the reader from the most elementary issues (...) to some of the most recent controversies and disputes. Many of the usual topics are covered including the nature of theories, laws, explanation in the different sciences, induction, and probability. But Smart also gives a heavy emphasis to problems of space and time, especially the "direction of time." He has adopted the excellent device of supplying a commentary on further reading at the end of each chapter which enables the student to pursue topics in greater depth. Smart's own views, familiar to those who know his work, are not hidden here but there is a serious attempt to report different views and to provide the reader with the information needed to explore controversies. As an introduction for the intelligent student, this now stands as one of the best books available.--R. J. B. (shrink)

The author attempts to show that Plato continued to hold his theory of Forms in his later period by arguing that analysis of the late dialogues reveals their assumed existence. The objects of knowledge considered in the later dialogues have the basic traits attributed to the Forms in the middle and early dialogues. The Forms are not known by "intuition" or "acquaintance," but as that which is required for λόγος. The result of this approach is a kind of Kantian interpretation (...) of Plato—that the Forms are definitive of our experience of things, not of the things themselves.—R. J. W. (shrink)

Selections and translations are included from the "older" generation of Kant scholars who have shaped our contemporary understanding of Kant. These include selections from Vaihinger, Paton, Lovejoy, Cassirer, Heimsoeth, and Beck. Gram's introductions to the three parts help to focus on the key problems that have been raised by (...) Kant scholars. The result is a provocative introduction to the interpretation of Kant's philosophy, especially the problems emerging from the Transcendental Analytic. The letters included in this book are extremely valuable for gaining a further insight into Wittgenstein, especially during the period before and immediately after the writing and publishing of the Tractatus. They exhibit Wittgenstein's humanity, his literary and musical interests, his self-doubts and anxiety concerning the publication of the Tractatus. There are reflections on suicide and an important brief statement about the point of the Tractatus where Wittgenstein declares that "the book's point is an ethical one." The Memoir is uneven (...) and not always in clear focus, but it is helpful in shedding light on a little known aspect of Wittgenstein's life.--R. J. B. (shrink)

This book, one of a large series, is a compilation of quotes. On the surface, this would seem an especially precarious task to undertake with Nietzsche; for he, perhaps more than any other philosopher, runs the danger of being drastically misunderstood when his remarks are wrenched from a broad context-having said practically everything at one point or another. Nietzsche has suffered so much from this that it is perhaps in principle unjustifiable to assent to any further effort along these lines. (...) Yet, this book does have the redeeming feature of organizing itself into a consistent pattern which does some justice to the notion that Nietzsche was, in fact, engaged in a systematic undertaking--albeit in his highly idiosyncratic way. It opens with a presentation of the symptoms of nihilism and its origin in metaphysics. The succeeding chapter deals with the overcoming of metaphysics. Out of this arises "The World as Will-to-Power." The epistemological consequences of this ontology are contained in "Truth and Valor". The collection concludes with a consideration of the over-man. A very precise index makes this a valuable reference book for those willing to trace their Nietzsche through the mediation of the French language.--R. J. G. (shrink)

Though there has been a trickle of discussion of Sartre's work after Being and Nothingness, substantial criticism has been almost absent from the Anglo-Saxon world. The authors have set themselves the limited but extremely difficult task of summarizing and epitomizing Sartre's major philosophical works since Being and Nothingness, including Saint Genet, Questions de Méthode and Critique de la Raison Dialectique. They have done this with finesse and lucidity. The result is more than a summary, but a guide for exploring the (...) labyrinth of Sartre's recent writings.—R. J. B. (shrink)

All too rarely an anthology is put together that reflects imagination, command, and comprehensiveness. Rorty's collection is just such a book. Although primarily concerned with the metaphilosophical issues of precisely what is new and distinctive about the linguistic turn, excellent selections are included from a great variety of orientations. Both the more formalistic approaches of Carnap and Bergmann as well as the more informal perspectives of Ryle, Hampshire, and Austin are well represented. The whole is constructed so that the reader (...) participates in a continuous dialectic of positions bringing us right up to recent discussions of transformational linguistics. There is a masterful introduction which takes a comprehensive look at the entire range of positions, revealing basic similarities and differences as well as locating the chief unresolved problems. A comprehensive bibliography enables the reader to locate almost any important discussion of the issues explored. This book is an ideal supplement for any course dealing with the varieties of analytic and linguistic philosophy. Unfortunately there is no index.—R. J. B. (shrink)

This is the first commentary on Wittgenstein to deal with both the Tractatus and the Philosophical Investigations. Written as an introduction, it is clear, sober and balanced. Pitcher has made intelligent use of the recent spurt of critical literature on Wittgenstein. Unfortunately, the work is not really comprehensive. Technical logical and mathematical doctrines in the Tractatus are not discussed, nor is there a serious discussion of das Mystische and related topics. While Pitcher's careful attempt to reconstruct arguments is highly successful (...) in clarifying the Tractatus, this technique is less successful in the explication of the Philosophical Investigations. Pitcher follows the conventional interpretation in dealing with the later and the earlier Wittgenstein, although some important similarities and continuities are suggested. This study should prove helpful to those who find Wittgenstein's two books bewildering.—R. J. B. (shrink)

It is not the purpose of this short essay to try the impossible and give an adequate historical survey of the Western image (or rather images) of China. There is, moreover, a vast literature on the subject to which both sinologists and historians of European culture have contributed. The following paragraphs will restrict themselves to two poles in this history: the perception and reception of China in the 17th century (with Leibniz as the most significant and impressive representative of the (...) period)—in other words the image of China as current among the philosophes i.e., the pre-enlightenment, still Christian humanists, none of which was (or could have been) a sinologist properly speaking—and again at the end of the 19th century, when academic sinology began to get into stride. Without in any way detracting from the significance of his great predecessors and contemporaries, especially Marcel Granet, we shall limit our discussion to J.J.M. de Groot (Leiden and Berlin, d. 1921). The Plasmodium falciparum genome‐sequencing project has provided malariologists with vast amounts of new information pertinent to a multitude of cellular processes that previously were only guessed about. In exploring this morass of predicted genes and proteins, there is now a danger of simply re‐inventing the cell. Fortunately, new global transcriptional analyses reassure malariologists that they are not dealing with just “any old cell.” The informative papers on the plasmodial transcriptome by Le Roch et al. (2003)1 and Bozdech et al. (2003)2 (...) discussed below forge a bridge between the genomics and proteomics of P. falciparum. The prominence of the Essay is demonstrated by its widespread positive reception, evinced (...) in both published and private responses, in both England and Scotland, by the high estimation in which it was held within pedagogical circles as an anti-sceptical philosophical primer, and by its continual use as a textbook in both university and dissenting academy logic and moral philosophy classes. He argues that, although we might still wish to incarcerate such individuals to (...) prevent them inflicting further harm on others, we should be less enthusiastic to blame them for their actions.In many respects, I agree with much of Levy's treatise. I certainly do not regard ascriptions of blame as useful in my own work with this population. I believe that our goal should be to fully understand the nature of their emotional deficit to be able to treat it similarly to other researchers who work to treat other emotional disorders. To me, Levy's argument appears sound.However, I offer three considerations and raise questions within these considerations that might further the debate. First, not all rules involve care-based emotional responses to victims. As Levy notes, this is the origin of the moral/conventional distinction. The problem here is that we do consider someone responsible if they break a conventional transgression. The student talking in class is generally considered blameworthy for this action as long as they knew that the rule of not talking during the lesson applied to that classroom. Yet, there is no victim and no care-based emotional response. Here, the only thing necessary to ascribe blame and responsibility is that the individual knew that a rule exists. Given this holds for conventional transgressions, why must we necessarily make a special case, with respect to responsibility, for moral transgressions?I believe that Levy is fully aware of this concern. He specifically makes reference to moral responsibility and writes that:the kind and degree of wrongness, and therefore blame, which attaches to infringements of the rules [against double parking or line-jumping] is very different, and usually much less significant, than the kind and degree attaching to moral wrongs. For psychopaths, all offences are merely conventional, and therefore—from their point of view—none of them are all that serious.(2007, p. 132)But the danger here is that issues of blame and responsibility may become highly relativistic and hinge on the strength of the emotional reaction. This is a problem because, although we might judge someone as more blameworthy if he intentionally [End Page 149] runs over five people rather than one, do we really consider that there is a distinction in moral responsibility between these two cases? If not, might not responsibility relate to factual knowledge of the existence of the rule against the transgression rather than the emotional response to the transgression?Second, there is considerable debate regarding whether psychopathy represents a taxon or a continuum (e.g., Vasey et al. 2005; Edens et al. 2006). Assuming it does represent a continuum, then we have an additional concern. How little of an emotional response to the transgression reduces one's moral responsibility and blame? Is it only the very reduced (although usually not absent) levels of emotional response that are shown by individuals with psychopathy? Or should we consider moral responsibility and blame proportional to the level of the emotional response? If this latter option is adopted, then what should we do about individuals who show heightened emotional responses, for example, patients with specific anxiety disorders (Rauch, Shin, and Wright 2003)? There are already some data that inhibited children (a developmental precursor to some anxiety disorders; Kagan and Snidman 1999) show heightened conscience development (Asendorpf and Nunner-Winkler 1992). If such children commit moral transgressions, should we regard them as more morally responsible and more blameworthy than regular folks?Third, the issue of intention received little attention in this paper. I have been considered to show a similar lack of attention to intention in the past (Nichols 2002) and, moreover, in some respects the issue was of limited concern given Levy's main goals.
